Last Tuesday, July 13th, I spent a little time getting to know our new pastor, Bro. Bob Whiteside. His first Sunday at First United Methodist Church was on June 28th.
Bro. Bob has been in the ministry for 41 years serving churches as pastor in Hernando, Starkville, Oxford, Belmont, Calhoun City, Tunica, and now Macon. He served as District Superintendent for two terms. The first DS term was in the Senatobia District and his second DS term was in the Seashore District. Bro. Bob's last pastorate was at the Starkville United Methodist Church where he served for 10 years.
After graduating from Corinth High School, Bro. Bob attended Wood Junior College and then Millsaps College where he played basketball for the school. He graduated with a BA in history from Blue Mountain College. He was an Assistant Coach at Millsaps College at one time. When he made the decision to go into the ministry, he was with the Jackson Fire Department. He attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and received a Master of Divinity degree.
Bro. Bob has spent 25+ years as a basketball official for the MPSA and MHSAA. We've probably seen him on the basketball court overseeing a game. He said that God and athletics have been his life. When I inquired about any hobbies, he stated that athletics was his hobby, although he does do a little bass fishing. He is a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow.
Bro. Bob and his wife, Sallie, have 15 grandchildren together. He stated that they were "pleased to be in Macon and part of the Macon Community." You can visit and get to know Bro. Bob yourself on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays when he will be at the church office or during morning worship at 10:50 a.m. every Sunday. Come join us this Sunday. We'd love to see you!
