WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY:

Active ImageWe will begin our Women's Bible Study on Monday, October 26th, at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.  We will begin a new Beth Moore study.

Esther: It's Tough Being a Woman by Beth Moore looks at the Old Testament story of Esther as a profile in courage and contains many modern parallels for today's woman. Going up against heavyweights bent on her destruction, Esther trusted God and landed a blow that saved her people. Esther's destiny can be yours as you know more deeply the God who is in your corner.

Join Beth in an in-depth and very personal examination of this great story of threat and deliverance. She peels back the layers of history and shows how very contemporary and applicable the story of Esther is to our lives. If you've ever felt inadequate, threatened, or pushed into situations that seemed overpowering, this is the study for you. Just as it was tough being a woman in Esther's day, it's tough today. This portion of God's Word contains treasures to aid us in our hurried, harried, and pressured lives.

If you are interested in participating in this Bible Study, contact Ms. Ann Tindal or the church office.  The workbooks are $18.95.

EDUCATION FUND:

Due to our current economic conditions, there are a few students at Central Academy who need assistance with tuition, school supplies, and meals.  Therefore, the Administrative Council voted to continue our Education Fund to assist these students.

If you would like to make a one time donation or a weekly or monthly donation for this purpose, you may designate your check or mark the envelope as "Education Fund," and it will be used for this purpose.  At the current time, there is one student who needs assistance with tuition.

ORGAN CONCERT:

Mr. Faser Hardin will present an organ concert using our 1937 Kilgren Pipe Organ  in our sanctuary on October 30th at 5:30 p.m.  A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

175th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION:

We will celebrate 175 years as a Church (1834-2009) on Sunday, November 1st during our morning worship service at 10:50 a.m.  Our own Morgan Stuart Roberts will be leading the service.  Mr. Faser Hardin will be a part of the service as well.  He and his family will provide additional music in song.

CHARGE CONFERENCE:

The Noxubee County Charge Conference will be held at our church on November 3rd at 6:30 p.m.  Our handbell choir will provide special music.  An offering will be taken at Charge Conference.  This offering will support Campus Ministry at MSU and MUW.

HEALING HEARTS AND HOMES:

Active ImageA small group from First United Methodist Church went to the Mississippi Gulf Coast on September 21 -23 to help in the rebuilding that has continued since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The group consisting of Bro. Bob Whiteside, Sallie Whiteside, Jolynn Cotton, and Lynda Cooper, joined the larger group of United Methodists for this 3 day mission event.

During our regular Wednesday night service on October 7th, Jolynn and Lynda presented a program to the church detailing what the mission trip involved as well as what they learned about the state of the Coast's recovery since Katrina. We watched a video that showed the devastation from the hurricane and then another video that encouraged more volunteers for the rebuilding on the Coast as well as the cost for building a house. Since the hurricane, the United Methodist Conference has built 90 complete homes as well as worked on thousands of homes that were not completely destroyed. He
re are some pictures from their trip. CLICK HERE FOR KATRINA PICTURES.

Here are some other facts concerning the United Methodist Church and the Gulf Coast Recovery since Hurricane Katrina that Bishop Hope Morgan Ward shared in her August 6th ePistle, "
In four years, over 158,000 volunteers have worked in recovery in south Mississippi. Through the efforts and generosity of The United Methodist Church, over 12,000 families are back home. 400-500 families have requested our assistance and wait for our help. Through the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, we have saved over $100,000,000 in labor cost!"

It is the desire of many who saw the videos and heard the program given by Jolynn and Lynda that our church join with other churches in the Starkville District to pay for a house that is built on the coast by the United Methodist Church. It costs $40,000.00 to build a MEMA house. If you are interested in making a donation to this cause, see Bro. Bob Whiteside.

On Sunday, October 4th, Bro. Bob Whiteside presented a Certificate to our member, Pooh Penick, recognizing her completion of the requirements for becoming a Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church.  Pastor Pooh's designated area of ministry will be in the local work-center/prison here in Noxubee County.
Congratulations Pooh!

INFANT BAPTISM:
Active Image

On Sunday, October 4th, Lee and Stacey Lindley presented their baby, Maggie Elisabeth Lindley, for holy baptism.  Her sister Addison also joined in the celebration.  The church was filled with their family and friends in support of this special holy sacrament.  Little Maggie behaved beautifully during the baptism, and captivated the entire congregation with her baby "chatter" during this special moment.  Paternal grandparents are Les and Suzanne Lindley of Starkville and Roy and Marianne Stuart.  Maternal grandparents are Debbie Coker and the late Larry Coker.  Great grandparents are Mrs. Frances Bell, Mrs. Syble Coker, and Mrs. Nickey Stuart.

GALS Met In October:

GALS - God's Amazing Ladies in Service - met on Thursday, October 8th, to discuss the status of our many projects.  For those GALS who missed the meeting, here's a brief summary of our meeting:

We will have our Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 1st, in the Fellowship Hall.  Everyone should bring a "finger food" for all to enjoy.  We will reveal our Secret Sisters at this party, so bring a Christmas gift for your secret sister.

Marilyn Frantzen has completed our cookbook, "Southern Cooking."  We hope to have it ready by Christmas for everyone.  We will be printing 150 copies to sell.  The money from the cookbook sales will be donated to either the Katrina house project or the Methodist Children's Home.

Ann Tindal presented her plan for our Stock the Freezer project.  We will meet on Saturday, November 14th, at 9:00 a.m. to cook the dishes selected to stock our freezer.

We are having a Winter Retreat on January 16-17, 2010.  Pooh and Mary Ann are checking out two different facilities for having the retreat.  We are going to do Beth Moore's Loving Well - Retreat in a Box during the retreat instead of getting a speaker.

We discussed the Bible Study.  Everyone agreed on Esther:  It's Tough Being a Woman by Beth Moore for our next study.  I don't recall when they decided to begin it.  I will find out and update the website.

We will make Moravian Stars on the Saturday we meet to cook for the Freezer -- November 14th.  When we're not cooking, we'll be making the stars to give to people.

Pooh discussed the plans for the Women's Conference on October 23-24 in Tupelo.  Everyone leaving on Friday needs to meet at the Fellowship Hall parking lot at 3:00 p.m.   Contact Pooh for more information.

Some new ministries for our group:

We are going to visit the residents at the Elderly Care Nursing Home every second Sunday of the month.  Mary Ann suggested that we take mini muffins and bananas for the residents as a part of the visit.  Anyone interested in going this Sunday, October 11th, meet in the church parking lot a little before 2:00 p.m. so we can all go together.  Two GALS will be assigned a second Sunday of each month, but anyone can go with them.  You can sign up to be the designated person for a month.  Let Mary Ann know what month you want to go.

Pooh is checking into our group going to the Stew Pot in Jackson one Saturday to serve people.  It's something like a soup kitchen.

Our group is going to help assemble the Christmas bags for the prisoners at the Macon Work Center.

A lot was discussed at this meeting.  This represents the "high points" for me.  Hope to see you at the next meeting or on November 14th for Stock the Freezer!
