Rev. Jack Williams and his wife, Vetrice

On Sunday, February 15th, First United Methodist Church welcomed a former pastor back to our pulpit to kick off our 175th Anniversary Celebration.  Rev. Jack Williams was the pastor here from 1978 until 1979.

Rev. Williams began his sermon by recalling several fond memories he had from his time here in Macon including the "great flood of '79".  Many people in the sanctuary were nodding their heads as he described waters rising way high after that terrible rain.  He even brought a Bible with him that was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Bob Weyburn.  Rev. Williams' sermon topic was "A Walk With God" using selected verses from Exodus 3 and 4.

After the morning worship service, we all went to the fellowship hall for a wonderful pot luck dinner.  It was so nice to spend this time with Rev. Williams and his wife, Vetrice.  When Rev. Williams retired, the couple built a home in Corinth, Mississippi where Rev. Williams continues to be active in church teaching Sunday School on occasion and continues to preach at various churches as needed.  Here are some pictures from this special Sunday service and fellowship.  CLICK HERE .

The next event planned as part of our 175th Anniversary Celebration is our Revival on March 29th through April 1st with Rev. Dale Hathorn.  Please make your plans to attend this special event.

Snow on March 1, 2009

On March 1, 2009, we woke up to a wonderful sight!  Beautiful snow lay covering everything outside. The beauty of the snow itself was a praise to our God and made us rejoice in this rare and lovely gift for our sweet Southern town.  By the time for church, most of the snow was melting away, but for a short time that morning, we all enjoyed its beauty and peacefulness . . . at least until the boys got to throwing snowballs!  Hope you too enjoyed the snow that morning while it lasted.

WE WELCOME A NEW MEMBER TO FIRST METHODIST:

On Sunday, March 1, 2009, First United Methodist Church welcomed Debbie Wilkins Whitfield as a new member to our congregation.  Please offer your friendship and extend a welcome to Debbie when you see her.  Debbie has already gotten involved with the new Women's Ministry at our church, so many of us already know her.  It's great to have Debbie become a part of our church family!

LENTEN LUNCHES:

Our Lenten Lunches continue on Wednesday, March 11th at Noon with Rev. Curtis Bray of Shaeffer's Chapel United Methodist Church.  Please bring your lunch and join us in the fellowship hall.

The two may be forever intertwined - Mardi Gras and Katrina Recovery.  News reports of the festivities remembered Katrina as they zoomed in on the parades from Mobile across Mississippi to New Orleans.

We celebrate in 2008 these amazing statistics, numbers of people touched through our ongoing recovery efforts in the past year:

** 3295 families returned to completed homes in 2008 through our recovery ministry.

** 836 volunteers worked in Mississippi in October, November and December, giving 31,544 hours of service.

** Our ministry is one of the "top ten homebuilders" in Mississippi, with 73 new homes completed.

** 1 1200 square foot home plan costing $40,000 has been developed and approved by three coastal counties, enabling us to put together coalitions of churches and groups for new home builds.

** Our case management leaders have worked to access $153,875.61 in grants beyound the connection United Methodist Church.

** Camp Love has been completed and dedicated at Nugent United Methodist Church.

** Our Mississippi recovery effort is extended through April, 2011.

** The cabinet and I project a workcamp on the coast September 21-23 with an invitation to all to join the effort and witness.  I hope you will mark your long-range calendar for this time of mission together.

With gratitude for your ministry,

Hope

SOUP SUPPER ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING
Active Image
The Administrative Council voted to begin a Women's Ministry here at First United Methodist Church.  Pooh Penick was approved to head up the ministry.  There will be an organization meeting for the Women's Ministry on Thursday, February 12th at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.  A soup supper will be provided for all women who attend.  We will discuss activities and projects for the group.  There will be a nursery provided.

The idea for a Women's Ministry at our church was first discussed at the Women's Retreat in November.  In fact, the picture on the left is when Pooh shared with us at the Retreat that she felt moved by the Spirit to chair the Women's Ministry for our church.

If you are unable to attend this organizational meeting, but would still like to participate, please contact Pooh Penick.  One of the "ministries" of our group will be a "Secret Sister" program between the different women of our church.  We will draw names at this meeting to begin the Secret Sister ministry, so if you want to participate and can't attend this meeting, please let Pooh Penick, Tina Ferrell, or Vicky Rogers know.  We'll make sure to add your name to the pot!

REV. JACK WILLIAMS TO KICK OFF 175TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

This coming Sunday, on February 15th, the Rev. Jack Williams will be leading our Sunday Morning Worship Service as the "kick off" for our Year-Long celebration of our church's 175th Anniversary.  Rev. Williams was the pastor of our church from 1978 to 1979.

Rev. Jack Williams was born in Conway, Arkansas, and grew up in Lexington, Mississippi.  He then studied Aeronautical Engineering at Mississippi State.  After answering the call to ministry, Rev. Williams majored in philosophy at Millsaps College in Jackson.  He earned a Master of Divinity at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.

Rev. Williams and his wife, Vetrice, both grew up in Lexington, Mississippi and were in business there prior to his attending Millsaps College.  They have three children.  Jack, Jr., lives in Olive Branch, Mississippi. The oldest daughter, Delores, lives in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, while, Angela Griffin, their youngest daughter lives in Adamsville, Tennessee.  After serving under appointment for fifty-one years, the Williams built a house in Corinth, just two miles South of the Tennessee line.

Rev. Williams shared that "It has been a privilege to preach in various churches since retirement, and we look forward to being with you wonderful people of Macon on February 15th."

Rev. Williams' sermon topic for Sunday will be "A Walk With God" with selected verses from Exodus 3 and 4.  REMEMBER that we will have a covered dish dinner in the fellowship hall following Rev. Williams' service.  Please invite your friends and family to join us during this special service.

This special Sunday service will be the first of many throughout this coming year.  Keep checking back to our website for information of upcoming events in the life of our church.
