Thanksgiving Day 2008 PDF Print E-mail

Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude and of giving thanks.  Giving of thanks on Thanksgiving Day for a Christian is made toward our God, the one who created us all and provides for us all the necessary things for our life here in this world.  No matter the trials and perils of our life in this world, God is always there to take care of us and to give us all good things.  So on this day, we should remember to thank God with sincere gratitude toward him and thank him for the many blessing that He has given us.

In the Bible there are many scriptures relating to thanksgiving and our Lord.

Phil. 4:6 - "We tell God our problems, making our requests know to HIm with thanksgiving."

Thessalonians 5:18 - "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God."

Psalms 50:14 - "Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most high"

Psalms 92:1 - "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High"

Colossians 3:17 - "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."

Psalms 140:1 - "Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto they name:  the upright shall dwell in they presence."

A Prayer of Thanksgiving:
by Joseph Auslander

We thank thee for our daily bread,
For faith by which the soul is fed,
For burdens given us to bear,
For help that lifts the heart's despair.

We thank thee, Lord, for eyes to see,
The truth that makes, and keeps us free:
For faults -- and for the strength to mend them,
For dreams -- and courage to defend them.

We have so much to thank thee for,
Dear Lord, we beg but one boon more:
Peace in the hearts of all men living,
Peace in the whole world on this Thanksgiving.

A Thanksgiving Prayer:
by Samuel F. Pugh

"O God, when I have food,
help me to remember the hungry;

When I have work,
help me to remember the jobless;

When I have a home,
help me to remember those who have no home at all;

When I am without pain,
help me to remember those who suffer,

And remembering,
help me to destroy my complacency;

Bestir my compassion,
and be concerned enough to help;

By word and deed,
those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Amen."

DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS:

The Community Thanksgiving service was held on Tuesday, November 25th, at First United Methodist Church.  Immediately following the service, many people stayed at the church to decorate for the upcoming Christmas season.  Here are some pictures from the joyful occasion.  CLICK HERE.

HANGING OF THE GREENS WORSHIP SERVICE:

On Sunday, November 30, 2008, our Youth will lead the Hanging of the Greens worship service.  Some of the pictures from last year's worship service can be found HERE.
Sunday is also the first Sunday of the Advent season.

On Sunday, November 16, 2008, the church celebrated the baptism of Lex and Mary Beth Waggoner during the regular Sunday morning worship service.  Both children were dressed in heirloom baptismal gowns from their paternal grandmother's family dated circa 1915.   Both Lex and Mary Beth behaved beautifully as they were each baptized before the First United Methodist church congregation.  Prior to the baptism, the twin's father, Neil Waggoner, joined the church membership.
     After the morning worship service, friends and family enjoyed a potluck dinner in the fellowship hall.  Here are some pictures from this special event of our church.

O
n November 7 and 8, 2008, twenty-one women of First United Methodist Church participated in the church's first women's retreat at the Tombigbee River outside Aliceville, Alabama.  The retreat's spiritual theme, "His Lavish Love, His Eternal Faithfulness" was based on the Bible verse from Deuteronomy 7:9 "Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed GActive Imageod.  He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands."  The worship sessions were led by a former Macon native, Morgan Stuart Roberts, who began her own personal spiritual journey while attending First United Methodist Church as a child and teenager in Macon.  Morgan is presently attending Wesley Biblical Seminary.  The mActive Imageusic was led by Irene Nichols of Hernando, Mississippi and her best friend, Jane Dempsey of Leland, Mississippi.
     Eve
ryone had a great time.  It was such a joy to spend time alone with our fellow Methodist women and have no outside responsibilities and pressures interrupting our time of fellowship.  We ate a lot!  There was potato soup, cheesy chicken chowder soup, Pooh's famous chicken salad, cheese dip, appetizers, cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, Ms. Marilyn's homemade applesauce, chicken spaghetti, yeast rolls, and yummy cakes and cookies to chow down on.   We sang and praised God with the direction of our wonderful music leaders.  We worshiped and praised God through Morgan's Biblical teachings and prayer.  We opened ourselves up in the small group meetings and shared with each other our prayer concerns.   By the way, Morgan has grown so much as a spiritual leader.  She was always so gifted, but she has truly become something special as a spiritual leader.
     One of the important  decisions that we made at this retreat was to elect Pooh Penick as the Women's Ministry leader of our church.  We also have decided we will meet quarterly and have "Secret Sisters" at the church to keep us all connected.  The consensus of everyone attending was that this retreat was not going to be the only retreat, but was the first of many!  We have already started talking about next year's retreat!  Here are some pictures from the RETREAT.  CLICK HERE
     By the way, I am collecting everyone's email address for the Women's Ministry, so if I don't have your email address, please get it to me or Vicky Rogers.
     Thanks to everyone who helped with the Retreat . . . Definitely thanks to Ms. Ann Tindal, Melanie Dinsmore, Vicky Rogers, Morgan Roberts, Irene Nichols, Jane Dempsey, and everyone who made food or took their vehicle.  See you next year!
